I always thought I trusted God. Until I got hit slap in the face with a cancer diagnosis.
“Wow, how much do I really trust Him with everything?!“
Over the past few months, I’ve learned so much about how to have faith during times of uncertainty. I pray these tips help you learn how to face uncertainty with faith as well.
Give “Control” Back to God
I had to realize that I am not in control of my life. As much as I thought I was, I’m not. God is. As my mindset shifts, I am able to place my trust in God. My life is not my own, God holds it in his hands.
In whatever situation you are in, as much as you want to be in control or imagine you are in control—you are not. Let go of trying to be in control. Lay your burdens, life, and cares down at Jesus’ feet.
HE is over your life.
Heavenly Father,
I am scared of the situation I am in. I want to make things work out a certain way, but I know that ultimately I can’t. Help me to trust in you with this situation. You are the author and finisher. I put my trust in you, even when I don’t feel like it. My life is in your hands. Amen.
What do you need to “let go of” and give to God? How can you trust Him in your situation?
Listen for His voice, which will always be loving and kind–not full of fear.
Pray for God’s Will to be Done
When Jesus was praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, he prayed:
saying, “Father, if Thou be willing, remove this cup from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Thine be done.”
Luke 22:42
He was asking the Father if there was a way for him to not have to suffer.
He prayed “not my will, Father, but yours.”
You can learn from Jesus’ prayer and pray the same thing over your situation. Pray and ask for whatever you want, and pray for the Lord’s will to be done. Praying the Father’s will will bring you encouragement during uncertainty.
Trust Him. He is always, always with you– no matter what you are facing or will face in this life.
What past experiences can you cling to as you can remember how faithful God has been to you?
Make a Conscious Choice to Trust God
Every day that I wake up, I have to make a conscious choice to trust in God.
This is how to trust God during times of uncertainty. This is not always easy, especially as my days right now are filled with chemotherapy, low blood counts, weakness, and the unknown.
But if I can do it, you can too!
I choose not to listen to the enemy, I choose to trust God even when I don’t understand, I choose to have faith. If I am going to do this thing called Christianity, I am going to go all in.
I am going to trust God even during my darkness.
I am going to remind myself of God’s Word and who he says he is!
Is it easy? Absolutely not, but I have to try.
And the same for you, are you choosing to trust God when doubt comes into your mind? Or are you listening to the “what-ifs” ?
Take Life One Day at A Time
We are given enough grace for each day. Often we try to live in or plan out the future, and it costs us so much of our energy.
Where does your energy need to be now?—in today!
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Matthew 6:33-34
Yes, plan and be prepared for “tomorrow” but don’t worry about it. Don’t dwell in what’s going to happen tomorrow, or the next day, or the next day. Trust that your Father will bring you what you need when you need it. I have seen this time and time again in my own life.
Look at your life today. Have you already been worried about tomorrow? Take a minute to consciously bring it back to God, and have faith in him for this day.
Heavenly Father,
Your word says “do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow has enough troubles of it’s own.” Help me to trust you enough for each day. Help me not to look at or worry about tomorrow. It’s not easy. Amen.
Read Biblical Examples of Faith During Times of Uncertainty
What does the Bible say about trusting God during times of uncertainty? You can start with the book of Hebrews! This entire book is written around the theme of faith.
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
Hebrews 11:1
Abraham’s Faith
Abraham was told to offer his son, Isaac, as a sacrifice on the alter.
It was customary in Old Testament times to offer sacrifices for the forgiveness of sins.
If you aren’t familiar with the story: Abraham and his son travel up a mountain and head to the alter where Abraham is prepared to kill his child.
At the last second, as Abraham was about to strike his son, an animal appeared! God then told Abraham to offer the animal as the sacrifice, instead of his son.
Abraham and his son Isaac embraced and cried, and thanked God for offering another sacrifice!
As a parent, I cannot imagine being in Abraham’s shoes.
I would like to say that Abraham wasn’t fearful, or didn’t worry about his son. But scripture doesn’t seem to tell us much on that.
We are humans, and we were created to have emotions. We were created to feel.
However, even though Abraham probably grieved for his son as they traveled up the mountain, and even though he was probably broken inside, he continued to put his faith in God.
Instead of living in fear, he lived in faith.
In Abraham’s life, God was always faithful.
And he will always be faithful in your life, too.
Can you think of ways he has already been faithful to you? What ways he has showed up in the past when there didn’t seem to be a “way out”?
