Every mother in the bible has her own story. From Mary the mother of Jesus, to the unknown mothers of the Bible — these stories about mothers in the bible will inspire you.
Here is a list of 14 of the greatest matriarchs in the Word.
Who Are The Mothers Mentioned In The Bible?
There are a countless number of stories of mothers in the Bible. It is evident that women play a vital role in the Kingdom of God.
1. The Unamed Mother
This mother chose to give life to her son, even if it meant never seeing him again. This is a beautiful bible story about mothers love!
Then the woman whose child was the living one spoke to the king, for she was deeply stirred over her son and said, “Oh, my lord, give her the living child, and by no means kill him.”
1 Kings 3:16-28
2. Jairus’s Wife
One of the faithful mothers in the bible chose to support her husband as he went to find Jesus to heal their daughter.
He took along the child’s father and mother and His own companions, and entered the room where the child was. Taking the child by the hand, He said to her, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”
Mark 5:40
3. Jochebed
By faith Moses’ parents hid him for three months after he was born, because they saw he was no ordinary child, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.
Hebrews 11:23
4. Sarah
She thought she would never give birth, but God was faithful to her and she was faithful to him!
And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise.
Hebrews 11:11
5. Leah
Leah was unloved by her husband, but she praised the Lord for giving her many children.
She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “This time I will praise the Lord.”
6. Hannah
After being barren for many years, Hannah never stopped praying for a child. She promised God if he gave her a son, she would consecrate him to God.
I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him.
1 Samuel 1:27
7. Naomi
Naomi was the mother in law to Ruth. She felt God had left her when her son died, but she realized Ruth would always love her, and Ruth eventually married one of her other relatives!
When Naomi realized that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her.
Ruth 1:17
8. Mary
Mary was about 14 when she became the mother of Jesus. All throughout her life we can see how she was a wonderful mother to our Savior!
The angel said to her, “Don’t be afraid, Mary; God has shown you his grace. Listen! You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus.
Luke 1:30
9. Hagar
Hagar was the mother of Ishmael. I can’t image how she felt after Sarah gave birth to Isaac. She remained a faithful mother to her son!
Hagar gave birth to Abram’s son. And Abram gave his son who was born of Hagar the name Ishmael.
Genesis 16:15
10. Rebekah
Rebekah was Isaac’s wife, she was the mother of Jacob and Esau (twins!). Later in their life, they had some struggles as siblings. Rebekah remained a faithful and strong mother to her boys.
Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was childless. The Lord answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant. The babies jostled each other within her, and she said, “Why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the Lord.
Genesis 25:21
11. Elizabeth
Mother in the Bible of John the Baptist, Elizabeth gave birth to one of the greatest! She was “righteous before God,” and lived her life in such a way that honored him.
Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John. He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord.
Luke 1:13
12. Eve
The first mother mentioned in the Bible is Eve. Eve is often known as the “mother of all living things.” It was probably no easy feat being the very first mother, and the mother to Cain and Abel!
She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man.” Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.
Genesis 4:1
13. Bathsheba
Bathsheba often gets a bad rap, but in all reality, she was a faithful mother in the Bible. She was the mother to the great King Solomon! (Speaking of Solomon, check out these Proverbs for Christian moms!)
Then King David said, “Call in Bathsheba.” So she came into the king’s presence and stood before him.
The king then took an oath: “As surely as the Lord lives, who has delivered me out of every trouble, I will surely carry out this very day what I swore to you by the Lord, the God of Israel: Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne in my place.”
1 Kings 28
14. Salome
Salome was the mother of James and John, She approached Jesus and said she wanted her boys to be in his Kingdom. Talk about a helicopter mom.
I admire that about her though– she knew the best thing for her sons was the follow Christ.
Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him. “What is it you want?” he asked. She said, “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.”
Matthew 20:20-22
